Location
Heritance Kandalama is located in a breathtaking setting overlooking Kandalama Lake and surrounded by lush forests. It is conveniently near the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Dambulla Cave Temple, making it a prime spot for cultural exploration. The remote and serene location offers a peaceful retreat, though it also means that access to nearby towns and other amenities requires some travel.

Style and Character
Designed by the renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, the hotel is an architectural masterpiece that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. The design incorporates eco-friendly principles, with green roofs and walls blending seamlessly into the forest. The minimalist interiors, featuring extensive use of natural materials, create a tranquil and luxurious atmosphere. However, some areas of the hotel show signs of aging and would benefit from refurbishment to maintain their original allure.
8/10
Service and Facilities
Service at Heritance Kandalama is generally professional and courteous, though there are occasional lapses in consistency. The hotel offers three swimming pools, each with a unique setting, providing ample opportunities for relaxation. The well-equipped fitness centre caters to various workout preferences, and the on-site Ayurvedic spa offers a range of treatments aimed at promoting wellness and relaxation. The hotel also offers guided nature walks and bird-watching tours, leveraging its rich natural surroundings. Meeting and event spaces are well-appointed, suitable for business and social gatherings. However, the remote location means that off-site activities and amenities are limited, and the reliance on the hotel’s facilities is high.

Rooms at Heritance Kandalama are spacious, well-appointed, and designed to maximize the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Large windows offer panoramic vistas of the lake and forest, and the décor features natural materials and calming, earthy tones.
The 152 rooms and suites here are located in one of two wings, one of which has views of Dambulla Rock and the other – our particular favourite – overlooks the iconic Sigirya Rock Fortress.
For the best views, and the luxury of a whirlpool bath, opt for a Deluxe Sigiriya Room.

Food and Drink
The hotel offers a variety of dining options that cater to diverse tastes. The main restaurant serves a diverse buffet with both international and Sri Lankan dishes, ensuring a satisfying dining experience for all guests. The rooftop bar provides a relaxed setting for evening drinks with spectacular views. Additionally, the à la carte restaurant offers a more intimate dining experience with gourmet dishes. While the food quality is high, some guests have found the prices, especially for beverages, to be on the higher side.

Value for Money
With an average price of around USD200-300 per night, Heritance Kandalama positions itself as a luxury resort in a unique and breathtaking location. The stunning setting, exceptional design, and range of facilities justify the higher price point to a large extent. However, considering the occasional maintenance issues and the premium pricing of food and beverages, some guests might feel that the value does not fully match the cost. Nevertheless, the overall experience, particularly for those seeking a tranquil retreat close to nature, is generally considered to be worth the price.
Access for guests with disabilities?
The hotel provides several accessibility features, including ramps and elevators, to accommodate guests with disabilities. Accessible rooms are available and designed to cater to the needs of guests with mobility challenges. However, the sprawling nature of the property, with its extensive use of stairs and varying elevations, can make navigation challenging for some guests. While the staff are helpful and willing to assist, the overall accessibility could be improved to ensure a more comfortable experience for all guests.
Family-Friendly?
Heritance Kandalama is relatively family-friendly, offering family rooms and child-friendly amenities such as a kids’ menu in the restaurants and high chairs. The swimming pools are popular with children, and the hotel’s natural setting provides ample opportunities for family activities, such as nature walks and bird-watching. However, the lack of specific facilities for children, such as a dedicated kids’ club or playground, might limit the appeal for families with younger children. Despite this, the tranquil environment and range of activities available make it a suitable choice for families seeking a peaceful retreat.
